In 2011, Australia's Green Lane Diary students raised
money to build clean water facilities for Dawu Methodist Primary
School in Ghana.
Thanks to their fundraising efforts, the school now has
tanks and ecological latrines.
Water security is a big problem in Ghana and is the
reason why many students drop out of school.
With a population of 24 million, half of Ghana's population is
living under impoverished conditions. One third of people in rural
areas lack access to safe drinking water and only 11% have adequate
sanitation.
10% of Ghanaian children die before their fifth
birthday, mainly due to malaria and diarrhoea.
To improve the availability and quality of water in Ghana, Green
Cross International has developed the Smart Water for Green Schools
project.
