Week Four
This week's Green Lane Diary program is all about how to live a greener life. It's easy for each of us to make a few simple changes to help our planet. Five easy suggestions are below, but check out the website for more green tips.

Five easy ways to live greener
1. Switch to reusable containers for lunches.
2. Use green cleaners and re-usable cloths whenever possible.
3. Walk or ride to school.
4. Start a recycling program at your school.
5. Turn off lights, fans and air conditioners when not in use.
There is plenty more that can be done! Encourage your class to think of other ways to go green.

Green Schools across Australia
A great example of a green school is Saint Macartan's Primary School in Mornington. The whole school was designed and built to be as sustainable as possible. Your school can go green too! Find out more about what makes a school green and how you can get involved.

Food miles
'Food miles' are the distance food has travelled to get to your plate. The lower a food’s food miles, the better is is for the environment. Use the food mile calculator to work out how far your students lunch had to travel to get to school! What can your class do to lower their food miles?

It's estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch container generates about 30kg of waste in one school year. That's about 900kg per class of 30 students!
About The Project
The Green Lane Diary is a fun, interactive enivronmental education program. It is designed by environmental educators to help primary school children become aware of the stresses our planet confronts and how sustainable living can make a difference.
